The President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev, Nokia Chairman of the Board Jorma Ollila and RUSNANO Director General Anatoly Chubais started the Forum.
The program continued with “Nanotechnology and business. Bridging the Gap” panel discussion, attended by Jorma Ollila, Chairman of the Board, Nokia (Finland), Mikhail Pogosyan, CEO, Aviation Holding Company «Sukhoi» (Russia), Seok Cho, Deputy Minister of Knowledge Economy (Republic of Korea), Eli Opper, Chief Scientist, Head of Innovation and Industrial R&D Administration Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor (Israel), Vladimir Fortov, Àcademician, Director, Institute for High Energy Densities of Joint Institute of High Temperature, Russian Academy of Sciences (Russia), Andrey Vakulenko, Founder, CEO, Business incubator InQubit (Russia), Yaroslav Petrichkovich, Director General, Research and Production Center ELVEES (Russia), and John Preston, Managing partner, CChange Investments Management (USA).
For the first time within the framework of the Forum plenary session there was held the awarding ceremony of the Nanotechnology International Prize RUSNANOPRIZE-2009 in the field of “NanoElectronics”. Prize Symbols, Honorary Diplomas, Laureate Pins and monetary sum were awarded to Academician Leonid Keldysh (Russia)for pioneering studies of semiconductor superlattices and tunneling effects in semiconductors, widely used in nanoelectronic devices technology, particularly in molecular-beam epitaxy, and Professor Alfred Y. Cho (USA) for pioneering research and development of the molecular beam epitaxy, used to produce nanoheterostructure and its application in nanoelectronicsRIBER S.A. CEO Frederic Goutard (France) received Prize Symbol and Honorary Diploma for company’s contribution into development of molecular beam epitaxy equipment.
The first awarding ceremony of Russian Youth Nanoidustry Prize took place within the framework of the Forum. Russian Youth Nanoindustry Prize is awarded to Russian innovative entrepreneurs under the age of 35 for the development and introduction of new nanotechnology product or its production development. In 2009 the Prize went to Eugene Sevastyanov, electronics engineer from OOO NPP "Senseria" (Tomsk), for the development and introduction of conceptually new fireguard gas detector “IP 435-1” with a gas sensor element based on purpose-designed nanocrystalline metal oxide semiconductor thin films (grain size 10-20 nm).
The Forum attracted 10 191 representatives from 75 regions of the Russian Federation and 38 foreign countries (in 2008 there were 9024 participants and visitors from 32 countries), including:
- 4 022 Forum participants (compared to 4048 in 2008);
- 9 240 exhibition visitors (compared to 4212 in 2008);
- 951 exhibitors (compared to 559 in 2008);
- 409 media representatives, who covered the Forum activities (compared to 205 in 2008).
The Forum program included series of business, scientific and technological sections, poster sessions, presentations by participants of the Second International Competition of Scientific Papers in Nanotechnology for Young Researchers, and exhibition. A total of 307 participants took part in presentations and panel discussions of the business part of the Forum, as respondents, moderators and speakers, among them 214 Russian and 93 international representatives. 21 panel discussions were held along with 220 presentations of products, technologies, and world leading nanotechnology companies.
Discussions at the business program section meetings covered the development of innovative economy infrastructure elements, prospects for nanotechnology application in industry, international experience in production and use of nanotechnology products. Representatives of legislative and executives authorities of the Russian Federation and region heads made presentations of regional nanotechnology development programs.
Scientific and technological part of the Forum included 17 scientific and technological sections. 205 representatives of leading research institutes, including 130 Russian and 75 international participants made oral presentations. In addition to oral reports 715 posters were presented as part of the Forum scientific and technological program: 197 poster presentations of the Forum members and 518 posters of participants of the Second International Competition of Scientific Papers in Nanotechnology for Young Researchers.
The Forum exhibition presented latest nanotechnology products, -developments and nanoindustry equipment. The exhibition was attended by 392 companies. 340 companies, including 280 Russian and 60 international were represented at the exhibition. 52 companies, including 7 international, took part in the exhibition by default. Exhibition participants represented 50 cities from 33 regions of Russia and 15 foreign countries (Austria, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Iran, Japan, Korea, Lithuania, Republic of Belarus, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, USA). Total exhibition booth area amounted to 2 993 sq.m.
